How to use this tool
Count one step for a parent, two for a grandparent, and three for a great-grandparent. Use the nearest shared ancestor for the path you are describing. Multiple shared ancestors can produce more than one relationship.
A practical example
If each person is three generations below the shared ancestor, they are second cousins. If one is three steps down and the other four, they are second cousins once removed.
Common questions
What does removed mean?
It is the difference between the two generation counts. Cousin degree is one less than the smaller count.
Does this establish biological kinship?
No. It labels a supplied family-tree path. Adoption, step relationships, half relationships, and uncertain parentage need their own context.
