Family tree vs family archive
A family tree organizes people and relationships. A family archive organizes the materials, memories, sources, and permissions that help explain their lives. Many family projects benefit from both.

Use a tree to ask relationship questions
Who were this person's parents? Which siblings belong to this household? What supports this proposed connection? Keep uncertain relationships labeled rather than using a diagram's neat appearance as evidence.
Use an archive to preserve context
An interview, a recipe card, or a photograph can tell a story that does not fit into a name-and-date field. Retain the original, the contributor's explanation, and the audience for which it was shared.
Connect them without losing the source
Link a photograph to the people believed to appear in it, but retain the caption and any uncertainty. If a relationship changes, the original photograph and its provenance should remain understandable.
