A family custom is useful to future generations when its practice, context, and source are recorded together. One family's recollection should not be presented as a rule for every community.

Ask who practiced the custom, where they learned it, when it was used, and whether relatives remember variations. Keep instructions and the story of the custom together.
An example to follow
For a Pesach recipe, ask about ingredients, utensils, substitutions, and who prepared it. Label an explanation of its origin as a recollection if it has not been verified.
Keep the record useful for the next relative
Save the original item or recording, the source of each claim, and the date you added the note. Label estimates and disputed details. Decide who should have access before inviting other people to help.
