How to organize old family photographs

A practical first step
Photograph the album or envelope before separating anything. Assign a simple identifier to each item, capture front and back, and record names as known or tentative.
An example to follow
'Box 2, envelope 4, photo 7' lets a cousin find the original even when no one knows the date. Keep that identifier with every digital copy.
Keep the record useful for the next relative
Save the original item or recording, the source of each claim, and the date you added the note. Label estimates and disputed details. Decide who should have access before inviting other people to help.
